Trampolines -A Brief History

Although the roots of modern trampolines can be traced back to China, Persia the Ancient Egyptians and even Eskimos, who used Walrus skins to bounce each other. In fact the first modern trampoline only actually came into existence in the 20th century in America. George Nissan and Larry Griswold a gymnast and assistant coach used their experiences of training with and mending the safety nets used by trapeze artists to inspire their first portable trampoline in 1936.

Trampolining as a sport was born and from there was taken into gymnastic competitions from 1947, but took until 1967 for the sport to be recognized in its own right.

Trampolining has been recognized as an Olympic event since 2000, where it was introduced at the Sydney Olympics and since then has spread across the globe. Trampolines -A Brief History

For the last twenty years or so, Garden Trampolines have become popular, and have provided a huge boost to the sport. The success at the top of any sport is governed by the width of potential talent coming in at the bottom, and the boom in residential trampolines has greatly increased the number of potential high end athletes.

Today, trampolining is popular the world over, even in the developing world, with China and India growing to match the USA, Australia and Europe. The Trampoline Medals at the 2008 Olympics were won by China, Canada and Uzbekistan.

The pinnacle sporting event the Olympics Trampolining event, was even honoured in 2008 with the presence of 94 year old George Nissan, at the the Bejing Olympics. For him, when inventing the modern trampoline sport, making it an Olympic Sport must have seemed a dream.
